WHICH SHAMPOO?

There are many different shampoos and many different skin diseases. Some skin problems are a result of a combination of different problems. Dogs with a skin allergy often scratch themselves so much that they also get a bacterial infection with a lot of spots, dry scales and crusts on the skin. This might be treated with an antibacterial shampoo at first but once the infection is controlled a different shampoo can help control the allergies.

A visit to the clinic will allow the vet to diagnose the cause and then choose the best shampoo. At Hung Hom Vet Clinic we can choose from many different shampoos described below.

HYLYTE

For routine cleansing of normal, dry or sensitive skin. This is a gentle soap free with emollients for moisturizing and protein for conditioning of the hair coat. Natural moisturizing factors promote hydration, while essential fatty acids (EFAs) replenish the epidermal barrier and aid in the control of flaking and scaling by maintaining the barrier effect or seal of the outer dead layers of the skin. This shampoo is balanced for a correct pH or acid level for our pet’s skin. It can be used as often as needed and has a pleasant coconut smell

EPISOOTHE

Colloidal Oatmeal 2%, Glycerine 5%. Epi-Soothe is a hypoallergenic, gentle, soothing shampoo designed to help control and relieve itching in dogs and cats. Incorporation of the active ingredients into Spherulites (a sphere which remains on the skin and releases the oatmeal over time) provides sustained release after the shampoo is rinsed off. Chitosanide has water retentive properties promoting residual moisturising of the skin and also has a filming action which binds the Spherulites to the skin and hair. Episoothe will calm and soothe inflamed skin. The oatmeal will soothe allergic skin. Frequent washing of allergic skin will remove allergens and so reduce the cause of the skin problem.

ALOVEEN

Oatmeal and aloe vera. In addition to the soothing effects of oatmeal in a stabilised suspension, Aloveen also contains aloe vera which is known for its calming anti-inflammatory effects. Aloveen is used for cases of allergic skin disease and can be used with ALOVEEN INTENSIVE CONDITIONER a unique, concentrated residual conditioner, specifically designed as a leave on product for deeper conditioning, and to prolong the soothing effects of ALOVEEN SHAMPOO.

ALLERMYL

Monosaccarides, Vitamin E, Linoleic acid, Piroctone olamine
Cleansing, soothing and protecting shampoo. Allermyl shampoo is designed to soothe troubled skin, maintain skin integrity and epidermal barrier function and restore the natural microbial balance. This new shampoo is also used for allergic skin problems. It reduces the bacterial infections which often occur on inflamed allergic skin. The sugars (monosaccarides) in Allermyl attach to the skin surface preventing bacteria from attaching to the skin and reducing bacterial infection. Piroctone has an antibacterial effect while Vitamin E and Linoleic acid helps to improve the barrier effect or seal of the skin and restoring the natural balance of the skin

MALASEB

Chlorhexidine 2%, miconazole 2%. This is used for skin infections, with bacteria, yeasts and ringworm. The shampoo is formulated with potent antibacterial and antifungal agents and coat conditioners. The fragrance-free shampoo base descales and degreases the hair coat without stripping. It will remove dead skin and debris that builds up on the skin. The miconazole has a specific anti-fungal effect; the chlorhexidine will treat bacterial infections

SEBALYTE

Sulfur 2%, Salicylic Acid 2%, Triclosan 0.5%
A cleansing shampoo for the relief of scaling and mild infection associated with greasy skin and other nonspecific skin problems. Triclosan has an antibacterial effect while Sulfur and Salicylic Acid help remove old dead skin. Conditioners improve the coat and give a good shine. This has similar anti bacterial effects to Malaseb but is less drying. It slows the rapid growth of damaged skin which causes the dry flaky scale we see as dandruff.

PYOBEN or OXYDEX

2.5% Benzoyl peroxide
Has a powerful anti-bacterial effect. It is used to treat bacterial infections and greasy skin. It will clean then skin and remove greasy debris. It flushes the grease from the hair follicles. It is often used in parasitic infections of the skin to unblock parasite clogged skin pores which are prone to bacterial infections. This shampoo can irritate our skin so we should wear gloves. It can also bleach fabrics so use an apron and rinse any splashes!

CONDITIONERS

After a thorough shampoo the skin will be cleaner but itchiness can be caused by a lack of moisture in the skin. Dry skin can be very itchy, as we all know! Applying a conditioner will re-moisturise the skin. This can be left on or lightly rinsed. Alloveen and Episoothe are also available as conditioners which leave the oatmeal and aloe vera on the skin surface. These will continue to soothe the skin.

A visit to Hung Hom Vet Clinic will allow us to examine your pet’s skin, diagnose the problem and choose the correct shampoo therapy! We will help you care for what matters
