What is Cushing's Disease?

Cushing's Disease is a common condition in middle-aged to senior dogs. Since its symptoms are often mistaken for natural signs of ageing, many dog owners may not detect it promptly.

Cushing's Disease is caused by prolonged exposure to excessive glucocorticoids. Overproduction may occur due to problems with the pituitary or adrenal glands. Additionally, certain medications used to treat skin allergies can also lead to excess glucocorticoids, so caution is advised when using these drugs.

Key Symptoms:

• Abnormally increased appetite

• Excessive thirst and urination

Hair loss or thinning skin

Muscle weakness

• Susceptibility to recurrent infections

Treatment and Management:

The good news is that Cushing's Disease is generally treatable. With proper management, you can not only improve your dog’s quality of life but also reduce recurring skin infections. Regular veterinary check-ups and standardised treatment can effectively control the condition.

Important Note:

If you notice any of the above symptoms in your dog, be sure to schedule a veterinary appointment promptly!

Early diagnosis and treatment lead to better outcomes.
