‍ 🔍 What You'll Need

• Fluid bag

• Infusion set

• 3-way tap

• Extension tube

• 20ml syringe

• 21G needle

• Alcohol swabs

• Treats (for reward)

📋 Simple Steps

1️⃣ Prepare the system

• Hang the fluid bag high, connect the infusion set, 3-way tap, extension tube, syringe, and needle

2️⃣ Prime (most important!)

• Open the drip chamber

• Fill the tube with saline – ensure NO air bubbles

3️⃣ Draw fluid

• Turn the 3-way tap to the correct direction

• Pull the syringe to your required volume

4️⃣ Prepare to administer

• Turn the 3-way tap to the correct direction

5️⃣ Position

• Choose the scruff (between the shoulder blades)

• Gently lift the skin

6️⃣ Insert the needle

• Optional to clean the skin with alcohol

• Lift the skin and insert the needle at an angle of approximately 45 degrees into the base of the skin, with the needle bevel facing upward and the tip pointing toward the head

• If there is return of blood (possibly puncturing a blood vessel), remove the needle, readjust the direction, then puncture the skin again

7️⃣ Administer

• Slowly empty the syringe

• The skin will gradually bulge – this is normal

• If more fluid is needed, repeat Step 3

8️⃣ Finish

• Remove the needle, apply light pressure (if bleeding), give treats

• Close the drip chamber

• Change to a new needle after each fluid administration for next use

❌ What NOT to Do

• Do NOT use fluid with air bubbles

• Do NOT use cold saline

• Do NOT reuse needles

• Do NOT inject air

✅ Tips

• Warm the fluid to room temperature

• Use treats to distract

• Have your vet supervise the first time
