The Early Days

Hung Hom Veterinary Clinic (HHVC) was founded by one of the first locally sponsored vets in Hong Kong. Dr Norman Cheng received a scholarship from the Hong Kong government to study veterinary medicine in Queensland, Australia. He worked for the Agriculture and Fisheries Department and was one of the founder members of the Hong Kong Veterinary Association in 1982.

He established a clinic in Tsim Sha Tsui as part of Ralph Chambers and Associates, one of first veterinary practices in Hong Kong. This clinic moved to Hung Hom in 1993 or 1994. Dr Ross Kennedy-Smith managed the clinic from early 90s to Aug 1999. The clinic grew to employ a second part time vet and became a centre for referral for heart cases with a diagnostic ultrasound.

Dr Kennedy-Smith returned to his native South Africa to raise a family which has now grown to 3 children. Dr Andrew Pilling, the current owner, took over and began a long term plan to expand and improve the clinic with the ambition to constantly improve the clinic’s premises, equipment and the standard of service offered to the pet owners of Hung Hom. In late 1999 a second vet, Dr Mark Benjamin joined the clinic as a part time and then full time vet until 2004.

Dr Shevaun Gallwey joined the clinic in October 2001 and has since shared her time between the clinic and a charity clinic in Thailand. Dr Hugh Stanley joined in March 2005 as part time after leaving his post as head vet at SPCA and became full time in October that year. Dr Gillian Anderson was our most recent recruit in 2008.

Constant Improvement
2001

A rolling refurbishment program was carried out to improve the facilities for our clients and employees. The premise was enlarged by 50% and was extensively refurbished. An x-ray machine and in house laboratory services were installed and greatly improved our ability to diagnose and treat disease, while the top of the line Shor-Line kennels imported from USA meant that hospitalized pets had a safe room for their nursing care.

Our new logo in 2005

Saw an electronic revolution at HHVC. A computer record system and veterinary practice management software RxWorks, www.rxworks.com was installed. This has greatly improved the records kept and means we can give much better care and attention to all the pets who rely on us.

A new and updated image for the clinic was also created with the well loved cat and dog logo with a blue Cross above. An appointment system was introduced to make things easier and greatly reduced our clients’ waiting times. These changes were launched at a party in the clinic in October 2006, the first social event with invitations to our loyal supporters.

2008

Has seen continued investments and improvements. There is now a diagnostic ultrasound system and improved blood testing diagnostic tool. We are also very proud of the newly installed digital dental x-rays which will once again raise our ability to treat and care for the animals.

Our newest development of the logo for HHVC
2010 and onwards

Expectations of the veterinary profession have risen enormously in the last decade in Hong Kong. We believe that the efforts described demonstrate our commitment to a more professional approach to meet those expectations.

There was another expansion and refurbishment in 2010 to build a larger HHVC. The clinic now has a dedicated reception area, 2 private consult rooms and a proper dental treatment system and our opening hours on Sundays have already been extended for your convenience.

We hope that we have achieved our initial goals of providing the highest standard of veterinary care and customer service. We look forward to the new challenges ahead of us.
